Part 6 of 12 · 3 minThe Forgotten Promise

Listen

The golden feather on Elara's shoulder hummed softly, a warm vibration against her skin. She stepped closer to the wooden box resting on the cloud pedestal. Inside, dozens of sparkling letters floated like fireflies, each one waiting patiently to be opened. Leo held his hands out wide, as if trying to catch them all in a hug. "So many promises," he whispered. "Some look shiny. Some look soft. What do we read first?"

Pip hooted quietly and tilted his head, his cloud-white feathers fluffing up in the cool air. He pointed a small wing toward the largest letter, which shimmered with a gentle blue light. "That one," he said. "It sounds like a promise about listening."

Elara reached out her hand, not to grab, but to gently touch the surface of the glowing paper. As soon as her fingertips brushed it, the letter uncurled itself in mid-air. The ink shimmered and shifted from silver to a warm, friendly gold. Words formed before their eyes, clear and bright against the soft blue backdrop of the cloud room.

"I promise to listen!" Elara read aloud, her voice steady and kind.

The moment the words left her lips, something magical happened inside the room. The floating jars filled with laughter and quiet smiles. A jar labeled "Sharing Cookies" popped open, releasing a sweet vanilla scent that made everyone smile. Another jar, marked "Calling Back," let out a soft chime like a tiny bell. Even the air around them seemed to sigh happily, as if the wind itself had been holding its breath all along.

"You can hear me now!" Leo said, his eyes wide with delight. He tapped Elara's arm gently. "You really heard what I meant before."

Elara nodded slowly, feeling a warm glow in her chest. "And I think," she added, "that the wind is very happy too."

They turned back to the golden thread that led deeper into the castle. The thread pulsed brighter than before, guiding them toward a new shelf lined with jars labeled *Forgetting Friends*, *Losing Patience*, and *Hiding Secrets*. Pip fluttered around Elara's head, his eyes scanning the shelves. "There are so many more," he hooted softly. "Which one should we fix next?"

Elara looked at Leo. Then she looked at the glowing thread again. It seemed to whisper a question only they could hear: *What promise needs you most?*

Just as they were about to choose, a strange sound echoed through the cloud castle. It wasn't the soft hum of the wind or the light chirp of birds. Instead, it was a low, rumbling growl that made the shelves vibrate slightly. The golden feather on Elara's shoulder grew warm, almost too hot to touch.

A shadow fell over them—not from outside, but from within the room itself. It started as a small dark spot above the cookie jar, then spread quickly across the ceiling, stretching down like ink in water. As it moved, the shape of the shadow became clear: a giant question mark made entirely of swirling dark clouds.

Inside the center of the shadow, faint silver letters began to form. They weren't as bright as the others; they looked older, heavier, and somehow more serious than any promise before them.

"…and the truth was…" the letters whispered, blending with the wind's sigh.

Elara felt her ears warm up instantly. The golden feather buzzed faster, humming a tune that sounded both familiar and mysterious. She knew this wasn't just another forgotten promise to fix. This was part of something much bigger—something connected to the special letter Pip had shown them earlier.

Leo frowned, stepping forward. "Did you hear that? What does 'the truth was' mean?"

Elara took a deep breath. The air smelled different now—not sweet or starry, but like old paper and rain. She reached out toward the shadowy letters again, ready to read what came next.
