Part 5 of 8 · 3 minThe Garden That Blooms

Listen

The door to the tower swung open without a sound, as if it had been waiting for them all along. Inside, the air smelled of sweet honey and wet earth, a scent that made Pip's nose twitch happily. He hopped down from Mr. Bumble's roof, his fluffy white fur steaming slightly in the warm room.

"The road is asking us something," Maya said, her voice soft but curious. She held Leo's hand tightly, their fingers interlaced like puzzle pieces fitting together. "Can you hear it?"

Leo listened carefully. Yes, there was a hum, low and rhythmic, like a giant heartbeat coming from the floor itself. It wasn't scary; it felt like being cradled by something very old and very kind. Mr. Bumble parked right at the center of the room, his yellow paint glowing brighter than ever before, and his smiling face softened into a look of gentle pride.

"Follow the flowers," Owlbert hooted from a high branch near the ceiling. His wings were folded tight against his body, keeping him dry and cozy. "They bloom when we share happy thoughts."

The trio stepped out onto a winding path that led not to another room, but into a garden outside. This wasn't just any garden. The flowers here moved in time. A large blue flower bloomed with a soft *click* as Leo laughed at something Pip did, then closed back up when he stopped talking. A purple vine curled around their ankles only when Maya told a silly joke about clouds looking like cats.

"Look!" Leo pointed to a patch of moss near the path. Tiny silver dewdrops clung to each leaf, but instead of falling, they rotated slowly, forming a faint map on the ground. The trail led past a bush shaped exactly like Mr. Bumble's smiling face, though it was made of soft green leaves and tiny white blossoms.

They followed the glowing moss until they reached a small stone archway covered in ivy. Beneath one of the leaves lay something shiny. Pip hopped forward and sniffed it curiously. It was a key, no bigger than his paw, carved from smooth grey stone. But when Leo clapped hands with Maya to celebrate finding it, the key lit up with a soft golden light that matched the glow inside the tower.

"The Garden That Blooms," Maya whispered, reading the tiny etching on the stone arch. "It only opens for us when we're together."

They held their breath as they stepped under the archway, and suddenly, the whole garden seemed to inhale with them. The flowers tilted toward them, not closing now, but waiting. Even Mr. Bumble's smile seemed wider, as if he was proud of how well they were working together.

"So what do we do next?" Leo asked, holding the glowing key high. "Do we go deeper? Or do we rest for a minute and share some stories?"

Maya smiled at him. "Maybe both," she said. "But first, let's listen to Mr. Bumble. He knows where the road leads us now."

Mr. Bumble let out a low, warm hum that sounded like a song. It guided them forward, past a patch of mushrooms that chimed like tiny bells when stepped on, and toward a dark tunnel ahead. The path seemed endless, stretching into a misty blue that looked like the sky before rain.

As they moved closer to the entrance, the air grew cooler and heavier. Tiny droplets began to fall from the ceiling of the garden, splashing softly onto their boots. Then came another drop, and another, until a steady rhythm formed—a drumbeat made of water.

"The sky is opening up again," Owlbert hooted calmly. "But look!" He pointed upward. A swirling vortex of grey mist appeared above them, darker than usual, hiding something important within its folds.

Pip's ears twitched nervously as the first heavy drop hit the ground with a loud *plap*. Something red and familiar was caught in the swirl, spinning faster and faster, disappearing into the depths below.
