Part 2 of 6 · 4 minThe Sock Incident
The rain began as a soft drizzle before exploding into a deluge that turned the society's driveway into a muddy river. Inside the clubhouse, Meera adjusted her glasses and stared at the blinking cursor on her laptop screen, waiting for Ravi's reply to her formal memorandum.
"Here it is," Ravi said, appearing in the doorway holding an umbrella like a oversized parasol. He was still wearing his white shirt, but his feet remained bare within his slipper-like sandals, save for a single, slightly translucent sock on his left foot. "I found a minor ambiguity in Article 4, Section C."
Meera spun her chair around. "Ambiguity? The bylaw states 'members shall attend all meetings wearing proper closed-toe footwear.' Your current attire consists of open sandals and one ambiguous textile tube."
"Semantics," Ravi dismissed with a wave of his hand. "The letter specifies 'closed-toe'. It does not explicitly say 'with socks'. Therefore, as long as my toes are enclosed by the sandal straps—which they partially are—I am in compliance. The sock is merely an optional accessory for comfort, much like sunglasses or a belt."
Meera leaned forward, her eyes narrowing behind her spectacles. "A brilliant interpretation of the spirit over the letter, Mr. Reddy. But let us look at the intent. The primary function of closed-toe footwear in an indoor monsoon environment is to prevent water from entering the foot. A sandal without a sock allows rainwater to flow directly onto your left foot, creating an imbalance in hydration levels."
"Implicitly hydrated!" Ravi countered, stepping closer and leaning against the conference table. "Look at me. I am closed-toe on the left. The right is… well, open-toed but technically covered by a sandal strap. I meet the criteria. Now, please approve my compliance so I can enjoy my post-rain tea."
Meera tapped her pen rhythmically against her notepad. "Article 4, Section C also references 'standardized hygiene protocols'. A bare sandal in muddy rain conditions introduces soil particles to the toe area. This constitutes a breach of the 'Clean Foot' clause, which falls under the broader definition of proper attire."
"Everything is about the shoe," Ravi muttered, crossing his arms. "The shoe is just a vessel for the foot. The sock is just… extra. Like adding cheese to a sandwich that didn't ask for it. Why force the extra layer?"
Before Meera could respond with a technicality regarding moisture wicking fabric standards, her phone buzzed loudly against the table. A notification from the WhatsApp group flashed: *Meera Iyer* attached a high-resolution image file titled *Footwear_Hierarchy_Diagram.pdf*.
"Behold," Meera announced, projecting the image onto the wall using the laptop's built-in projector. "This diagram illustrates that 'Closed-Toe Footwear' is the parent category. Underneath it, we have sub-categories like 'Boots', 'Loafers', and 'Sandals'. And beneath 'Sandals', we find a distinct branch labeled 'Sandal+Sock Configuration'. Your current state sits in the grey area between 'Compliant' and 'Barefoot', but leaning heavily towards non-compliance due to partial coverage."
Ravi squinted at the pixelated diagram. "It looks complicated. Is that a sock on my left foot? It looks thin enough to be invisible."
"It is indeed," Meera said, pointing with her stylus. "But visibility does not equal compliance. Consider the umbrella. You wear it despite the fact that your head is still technically 'exposed' because water can seep through the fabric. Yet, we accept it as proper attire. Similarly, the sock completes the circuit of protection."
The group chat exploded with emojis and GIFs while Meera continued her verbal presentation.
"Precisely," Meera said, ignoring the digital noise. "Now that you have admitted to partial compliance, let us discuss the finalization of your attire. Will you don a full sock configuration within the next ten minutes, or shall we summon the Fire Brigade to inspect the moisture levels on your left foot?"
Ravi sighed dramatically, running a hand through his damp hair. "Fine, fine! You win, Secretary Iyer. I'll put on socks." He paused, looking at Meera with a mischievous glint in his eye. "But only if you promise not to cite the 'Sock Color Compliance' clause from Article 9 regarding office wear."
Meera smirked, closing her laptop. "Article 9 is reserved for emergencies and special events. Today is merely a Tuesday. However, I shall add a footnote: 'Socks must be opaque and non-slip'. No more see-through webbed footwear!"
"Deal," Ravi laughed, finally pulling a pair of thick cotton socks out from his pocket. "But watch me go." He tossed the socks to Meera. "Catch. Now you have proof of my good faith."
As Meera caught the socks, she noticed something strange in the corner of her eye. Through the rain-streaked window, a faint white blur moved across the wet lawn outside, followed by a low, cheerful bleat that seemed to echo off the glass.
"Did you hear that?" Ravi asked, tilting his head toward the window. "Something sounds like… a goat?"
Meera squinted at the blurry shape in the rain. "It could be Chintu. The honorary member we saw last week near the boundary wall."
"He's chewing through the 'No Entry' rope again," Ravi groaned, grabbing his umbrella. "I knew he'd find a way to ruin my perfect sock moment."
