Part 2 of 12 · 3 minThe Kite’s Secret

Listen

The paper caught the breeze like a white bird trying to take flight. It fluttered just out of reach, its edges crisp against the twilight sky. The boy, whose name was Leo, reached up with both hands but couldn't quite grasp it before it spun away again.

"It wants to show us something," Elara whispered. Her ears twitched, catching a soft hum in the air that sounded like a lullaby. "It's not just any note. It's carrying a promise."

Leo blinked his wide eyes. "A promise? How can a piece of paper hold one?"

Elara smiled gently and placed her hand over her heart. She could feel the tiny heartbeat inside Leo's chest, fast with excitement. The wind swirled around them, lifting small leaves from the ground and carrying them in a slow circle before dropping them softly near their feet. "The wind knows where to go," she said. "It leads us to things we need most."

They followed the floating scrap of paper until it drifted down onto the grass between two tall dandelions. Leo laughed as he picked it up carefully, blowing off a few bits of dust. "Look at this!" he exclaimed, holding it out so Elara could see.

On the front was a simple drawing of a red kite with a smiling face, but underneath the image was written in neat, careful letters: *'Promise to fly again.'*

Leo's eyes filled with tears. "I found my kite yesterday," he explained, his voice thick. "But now I lost it again. And this note… maybe someone left it for me? Or maybe I left it?"

Elara tilted her head again. The wind whispered softly through the trees behind them, sounding like a friendly laugh. "Perhaps you didn't lose it at all," she suggested. "Maybe you were just waiting to find your way back."

She reached out and touched the string tied around Leo's wrist. It felt warm, as if it had been carrying heat from a summer day. "This string connects you to your kite," Elara said. "And now, thanks to the wind, they are connected again."

Before Leo could thank her or say more, another gust of wind swept through the clearing, stronger than before. The dandelion seeds floated upward in a golden swirl, forming a temporary shape that looked like an old oak tree far away.

"There's something else there," Elara said, pointing toward the sound of rustling leaves coming from deeper into the forest. "Something trapped."

Leo grabbed his kite tightly. "Do you think it's another lost toy?" he asked, grinning.

Elara shook her head slightly as she listened to the wind whispering secrets only she could hear. "No," she answered softly. "It's a friend who forgot how to fly back."

Together they stepped toward the old oak tree, their boots crunching lightly on fallen leaves. As they approached, the branches seemed to sway in welcome, bending low as if inviting them closer. Inside the hollow of the tree, something small and round peeked out from behind a layer of moss.
