Part 6 of 6 · 4 minNew Normal
The air in the community hall smelled of vanilla icing and fresh earth, a scent that perfectly captured the bizarre fusion of celebration and administrative order that had defined the last hour. Chintu stood near the buffet table, his tongue stained red from the strawberry cake he'd been nibbling on while ignoring the ceremonial knife. He looked less like an animal and more like a small, furry dictator who had just declared war on carbohydrates.
Meera Iyer adjusted her blazer, which she wore with the same precision one might use to align a laser pointer. "Very well," she announced, her voice crisp despite the laughter still rippling through the room. "I accept the title of Chief Compliance Officer. But it comes with conditions."
Ravi Reddy, who was currently balancing a slice of cake on his head while wearing socks that were one neon green and one pastel yellow, nodded enthusiastically. "Conditions are good! I love conditions! It makes rules feel fair!"
"Fair is relative," Meera said, stepping closer. She pointed a finger at him. "Condition One: You will wear socks for the next seven consecutive days. No exceptions. If I see your bare feet in the common area before the week ends, the penalty is…"
"A fine?" Ravi asked, eyes gleaming.
"No," Meera corrected, smiling faintly. "A fine of one hour of mandatory goat grooming duty."
Ravi gasped dramatically. "One hour? With Chintu?" He looked at the goat, who seemed to be considering this with genuine interest. "Does he have a brush? Or just his tongue?"
Meera crossed her arms, watching him squirm slightly under the weight of the absurd promise. "Condition Two," she continued, ignoring his distraction. "You interpret the bylaws as long as they do not involve sock colors or grazing permissions."
"That's a lot of power for a guy who once approved a 'casual Friday' where everyone wore pajamas to the club house," someone shouted from the back. It was Priya Menon, leaning against the doorframe with a tablet in hand and a grin that said she knew exactly how bad Ravi's ideas were.
Ravi beamed, puffing out his chest. "Casual Friday is a myth! We had pajama day!"
"It was documented," Meera muttered, mostly to herself.
"Anyway," Ravi waved a hand dismissively at the memory of his own laziness. "I promise. I'll wear my socks. Black ones. Matching black ones. Maybe even fancy black ones with little gold stars if you want."
Meera nodded slowly. "Gold stars acceptable. Just not holes in the fabric. Article 9, Section C states that footwear must maintain structural integrity while remaining fashionable."
Chintu bleated softly, stepping forward and placing a muddy hoof near Meera's shoe. He seemed to be offering a silent endorsement of the deal.
"Fine," Meera conceded, reaching out to stroke the goat's thick, wavy coat. "You're honorary witness number one. And since we're doing this officially, why don't we take a group photo to mark the new normal?"
The room erupted into murmurs of agreement. Security guard Arun Kumar, who had been standing silently by the refreshments holding a clipboard that listed nothing but 'Guests Present', stepped forward with two small rolled-up flags. One was red for the Strict Compliance faction; the other was blue, which Meera realized represented the Reasonable Interpretations camp led by the elderly residents.
"Everyone get your flag!" Arun announced cheerfully, distributing them like candy at a birthday party. "Red side says 'Order,' Blue side says 'Chaos with Benefits.' You can hold either one."
Meera took her red flag, which felt heavier than expected, and positioned herself next to Ravi, who was now carefully slipping his second sock on over his first, making sure the colors didn't clash too badly. Chintu walked between them, ignoring the flags entirely in favor of licking Priya's hand.
Priya laughed, pulling back with a sticky smear on her palm. "So, what does this mean? Are we back to normal?"
"We're in a new normal," Meera corrected, adjusting her stance. "A fragile peace built on sock compliance and goat diplomacy."
Ravi raised his flag high above his head, waving it like a conductor's baton. "Let's make it official! Let's sign the treaty!"
Meera opened her notebook to a fresh page. "Sign away then, Vice-President. But remember: Article 7 states that all treaties must be ratified by a unanimous vote of the goat population."
Chintu let out a loud, clear bleat and took a bite of cake with his next breath, effectively ratifying everything in one motion.
As the flash of camera shutters captured the scene—Meera serious but smiling, Ravi grinning widely despite his mismatched socks, Priya posing dramatically, Arun holding his clipboard like a scepter, and Chintu chewing contentedly—the group knew this was only the beginning. The war over commas had paused, but the real battle was just starting: how long could they keep the goat happy without breaking any rules? And would anyone dare challenge Meera's new authority when she started inspecting shoes for lint?
"Alright," Meera said, closing her notebook with a satisfied click. "We reconvene tomorrow morning for a full review of Article 12 regarding pet hair removal."
Ravi groaned theatrically. "Can we schedule it after I finish my cake?"
Meera glanced at Chintu, who was now balancing another slice on his head. "He's already done reviewing. He approved the cake clause."
Chintu bleated again, a sound that could only mean agreement.
