Part 1 of 8 · 4 minThe First Rainy Route

Listen

The sky turned gray and heavy, like a wool blanket stretched too tight over the town of Oakbridge. Rain began to tap against the classroom windows, starting as soft drops and quickly growing into a steady drumming rhythm that echoed inside the room. Leo stood by the window, holding his sketchbook open but not drawing anything yet. "Look!" he pointed out. The puddles outside were forming perfect circles where they touched the asphalt, swirling like tiny galaxies.

Maya adjusted her glasses and squinted at a speck of mud near the door. "Do you see that?" she whispered. "The ripples are dancing. They're moving in patterns no one else notices."

Mr. Bumble, their yellow school bus, purred through the open doors, his painted smile widening into a cheerful grin as the humidity rose. He was bright and warm, smelling faintly of lemon polish and old rubber tires. "Hop aboard," Mr. Bumble rumbled in a voice like rolling thunder that sounded more friendly than scary. "I've detected a weather shift. My circuits say we need to go somewhere special."

Leo climbed the steps first, followed by Maya and Pip, the small white rabbit who bounced onto the roof with a soft thump-thump rhythm that matched the raindrops falling outside. Pip spun in circles on top of the bus, his fluffy ears twitching as he caught the scent of wet pine needles and ozone. "The air smells like secrets," Pip chirped, his voice squeaky and bright.

Owlbert perched on a branch of the playground oak tree just beyond the school fence, watching with wide, knowing eyes. He hooted softly, tilting his head as if listening to something only he could hear. "The road has changed course," he called down. "Follow my riddle: Where water flows and light glows, turn left where shadows grow."

Mr. Bumble chuckled, a sound like bubbles rising in soda. "Left it is! Hold on tight, folks. The usual route won't take us anywhere near as interesting today." He shifted his gears, and the familiar hum of the engine changed pitch slightly, sounding deeper, more mysterious.

As they rolled out of the school parking lot, the street lights flickered and dimmed under the thickening clouds. The traffic around them slowed to a crawl, then stopped entirely. Mr. Bumble turned the steering wheel with a gentle creak, guiding the bus off the main road onto a smaller lane lined with tall green hedges.

"Wait!" Maya exclaimed as they approached an intersection. "The sign says 'Park Road,' but the street beyond curves sharply left into what looks like nothing at all." She pointed to her notebook, where she'd sketched the map of their daily route. The new path wasn't on any paper or digital screen; it appeared only when the rain fell hard enough to make the puddles swirl and glow with a faint blue light.

Leo grabbed his sketchbook again, flipping to a fresh page. "Let's see what this looks like before we go further," he said, his pencil moving quickly across the paper. His lines wobbled slightly at first, then steadied as he focused on the glowing mushrooms beginning to pop up from the wet grass beside the road. They weren't ordinary mushrooms; their caps shimmered with colors that shifted from violet to gold in time with the rain's rhythm.

Pip hopped onto the dashboard, looking over the edge of the bus window. "They're dancing!" he cheered, pointing at a cluster of mushrooms that seemed to spin slowly as if caught in an invisible wind. "Look how they light up when the drops hit them!"

Mr. Bumble slowed down, his smile turning into one of curious wonder. "This is my favorite kind of rain," he said proudly. "It makes the hidden paths appear. Just like magic, but with more water."

The bus crested a small hill and dipped down into a valley where the trees stood close together, their leaves dripping steadily onto the windshield. Inside, the children leaned forward, eyes wide as they watched the secret world unfold outside their window. The air smelled sweet, like honeyed rain and damp earth.

"But why only when it rains?" Leo asked, tracing a line around a particularly bright mushroom in his sketchbook. "Why doesn't anyone else see these paths all the time?"

Maya tapped her chin thoughtfully. "Maybe the road knows we're brave enough to explore," she suggested. "Or maybe it just loves company."

Mr. Bumble hummed along, his headlights casting a soft golden glow onto the glowing mushrooms below. They reached the edge of a forest where the trees seemed taller and darker than usual, their branches forming an archway over the road. Something waited beyond them, something that made Pip's fur stand on end and Leo hold his breath.

"Should we go further?" Maya asked, her pencil hovering over her paper. "The mushrooms are glowing brighter now."
