Part 7 of 12 · 3 minThe Letter’s Shadow

Listen

Leo frowned, stepping forward. "Did you hear that? What does 'the truth was' mean?"

Elara took a deep breath. The air smelled different now—not sweet or starry, but like old paper and rain. She reached out toward the shadowy letters again, ready to read what came next.

A hush fell over the cloud castle room. Even the singing birds in their jars paused mid-note, tilting their heads as if listening to a secret tune. From the center of the room, a dark shape began to rise. It wasn't a storm cloud, nor a shadow from a passing ship, but something far more strange: it was shaped like a giant question mark, twisting and turning in the air as though alive.

Elara's wind ears tingled. They weren't just listening anymore; they were warming up, glowing faintly with a soft amber light. "It sounds… unfinished," she whispered. "Like someone stopped talking right in the middle of a sentence."

Pip hopped onto Elara's shoulder, his fluffy white feathers ruffling slightly as he fluffed up to make himself big and brave. "Maybe it's just a ghost story," Pip suggested with a wobble in his voice. "You know how clouds can get all silly sometimes?"

Elara nodded slowly, her eyes fixed on the swirling question mark. "But this one feels different, Pip. It feels like it knows us."

The shadowy letters seemed to pulse now, drifting closer until they were almost within reach. Elara could make out more words forming in the air: *"…and the truth was…"* Then a pause, a long, quiet breath of silence that made Leo's ears twitch.

Leo stepped forward again, his small hands gripping Pip's talons. "Do you think it's about the letter we found earlier?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper. "The one with the golden thread?"

Elara smiled softly. "I think so," she said. "But not just any letter. This is *the* letter. The one that could change everything."

Just then, a gentle breeze swept through the room, carrying sounds from far away—three distinct heartbeats, each unique and powerful in their own way.

The first was slow and steady, like a baby crying softly in the distance. Then came the second: sharp and barking, unmistakably a dog. The third heartbeat? It was quieter, softer, almost like someone knocking gently on a door.

"Three heartbeats," Elara murmured, closing her eyes. "Can you hear them too?"

Pip tilted his head, his golden eyes wide with curiosity. "I can hear them clearly now. But I don't think we should follow the sound yet."

"Why not?" Leo asked, frowning slightly.

"Because sometimes," Pip whispered, leaning close to Elara's ear, "the loudest sounds aren't always the ones you expect. And the last one? That one feels different. Like it might be waiting for us."

Elara opened her eyes again, watching as the question mark shadow seemed to stretch taller, as if reaching out toward them. The air grew still, and the jars of promises hummed softly in harmony with the mysterious heartbeat growing stronger by the second.

"What do we do?" Leo asked, his voice trembling just a little.

Elara took a deep breath. "We listen," she said simply. "And then… maybe we answer."
