Part 4 of 8 · 3 minThe Foggy Bridge Challenge

Listen

The silver mist bridge shimmered under the rain, looking like a ribbon spun from moonlight and water. It stretched out toward the old stone structure, its surface glistening with droplets that sparkled like tiny diamonds. Mr. Bumble slowed his wheels, tilting slightly as if to say, "Watch your step." Pip hopped off the roof and landed softly on the grassy bank beside the road, his fluffy white fur drying instantly despite the rain.

"Look!" Leo pointed at his notebook. The map had changed. A new path was drawn in glowing blue ink, leading straight to the center of the bridge. "It says 'Hold Hands' near the starting point."

Maya squinted through the falling rain, her glasses fogging up slightly before she wiped them clean. "The map doesn't lie," she said, tapping the paper. "But remember what Owlbert told us. These keys only open when we're ready to share. Maybe sharing means holding onto each other first."

The bridge was old, made of rough stone covered in thick fog that clung to their legs like wet wool. It felt slippery underfoot, and every step sent a small *splash* sound into the air. Leo took the lead, but he slipped right away. His boots slid on a patch of moss that looked smooth as glass. He grabbed onto Mr. Bumble's bumper just in time, dangling slightly before climbing back up.

"Oh no!" Maya gasped, rushing forward. "You're going to fall!"

"I've got it!" Leo shouted, trying to steady himself. But the bridge seemed to twist under his weight, and he wobbled again. This time, he reached out for Mr. Bumble's tire, but his fingers missed as the bus moved slightly forward. He flailed his arms and nearly lost balance.

"Wait!" Pip squeaked from behind him. "Look at my paws! They're dry because I bounced on the raindrops before getting here." Pip demonstrated by hopping lightly across a puddle without splashing, landing perfectly on the stone surface.

Maya stepped up next. She held her arms out wide to keep steady, then reached back and grabbed Leo's hand. "Take mine," she said firmly. "If you hold on tight, we become one team."

Leo hesitated for a second, then smiled. He tightened his grip around Maya's fingers. "Okay," he breathed. "One team."

Together, they moved forward. Their boots no longer slipped; the stone felt firmer under their joined hands. Mr. Bumble rumbled gently beside them, his painted smile widening as if cheering them on. Pip bounded ahead, occasionally looking back to make sure everyone was safe. As they crossed, the fog began to thin, revealing the old stone structure at the other end—a small tower with a round window that looked like an eye watching over them.

Inside the tower, a warm glow waited for them, smelling faintly of rain and honey. But before they could step inside, the ground beneath Mr. Bumble's wheels began to hum softly, as if the road itself wanted to know what they had learned on the bridge.

"Did you feel that?" Maya asked, turning to Leo. "The road is asking us something."

Leo looked down at his hands still clasped with Maya's, then up at the glowing tower. "Maybe," he said slowly. "But first, let's see what's waiting for us inside."
