Part 4 of 5 · 3 minThe Moonlight Race
"Look!" Bumble whispered excitedly. "It looks unusually close now! Like it's hiding something under its silver smile!"
Tilly reached up slowly, her tiny claws brushing against the cool surface of the moon. For a brief second, she felt warm and fuzzy, like being hugged by a giant cat. Then, just as quickly, the moon seemed to stretch upward, disappearing into the twinkling stars above.
"Oh no," Tilly sighed, watching the gap grow between her shell and the sky. "Now where did it go?"
"It hasn't gone away!" Bumble buzzed, his wings fluttering like a tiny fan. "It's just playing hide-and-seek again! Let's race to catch it before it decides to sleep forever."
"A race?" Tilly asked, her eyes sparkling with sudden energy. "But how do we find it if it's hiding?"
"Easy!" Bumble said, landing on a low branch. "We follow its shadow! When the moon is up, its shadow is always below it. If we track that dark patch on the ground, we can't lose it!"
Tilly nodded and scurried forward, her tiny legs pounding against the mossy earth. The forest was quiet now, save for the soft rustle of leaves and the distant hum of crickets. Their shadows stretched long and thin in front of them, like dark ribbons dancing on the ground.
"Come on, Pip!" Bumble called out. "The moon's shadow is our trail! Race you to the next big rock!"
Pip yawned, his tail twitching as he woke from a nap. "You guys are so loud," he muttered, rubbing his eyes. But then his ears perked up. "Oh! A race? With shadows? And the moon's involved?"
"Exactly!" Tilly chirped, her shell gleaming in the dim light. "If we stay close to our shadow, the moon will always be near us too!"
Pip scampered after them, his fluffy tail swishing behind him. The three friends turned into a blur of motion, their shadows weaving together like a tangled ribbon dance. They laughed as they zigzagged around tree roots and over fallen logs, sometimes tripping over their own feet but always laughing it off.
"Tag!" Bumble shouted, dodging a low-hanging branch. "If you touch the moon's shadow, you're out! But if you catch my shadow, I'm out!"
"Gotcha!" Tilly giggled as she tapped Bumble's shadow with her claw. Then, in one swift move, she spun around to face Pip. Her own shadow stretched out long and dark, waiting for him to land right next to it.
Pip leaped forward, landing gracefully beside the moving patch of darkness. "Got me!" he grinned. "Now you're both out! But wait… where did my shadow go?"
Bumble and Tilly looked down, only to see their shadows had twisted into strange shapes—a spiral here, a circle there. Suddenly, Pip's shadow merged with theirs, forming a giant heart-shaped dark patch on the forest floor.
"Aha!" Bumble exclaimed, pointing upward. "The moon must be smiling at us! Look how big it looks now!"
Tilly peered up, squinting against the soft glow of starlight. The moon hung low in the sky, glowing like a lantern made of liquid silver. It seemed almost within reach, as if it wanted to play a game with them too.
"Come on!" Pip called out, his tail wagging behind him. "Let's see how far we can go before the sun wakes up!"
They ran faster now, their laughter echoing through the trees like music. Shadows danced beneath them, shifting and changing shape with every step. Tilly felt a strange warmth spreading through her chest—not from the moon above, but from the joy of running alongside her friends under its watchful gaze.
As they neared the edge of the forest, the moon suddenly dipped behind a fluffy cloud that drifted lazily across the sky. The ground dimmed, and for a moment, it felt like the light had vanished entirely.
"Did you see that?" Bumble whispered, tilting his head. "The moon went inside the cloud!"
Tilly looked up, her heart racing with excitement. "Let's go find it again! It must be waiting just beyond that edge of the world."
