Every boy in the block stopped at step nine. How did akka jump from eleven?
In a Kazipet railway quarters block in 1995, the outside staircase is the colony's olympics, and every record is written in chalk on the wall beside the step. The highest line, at step eleven, has said one name for six years, and it belongs to a girl, the narrator's akka. The night before her wedding she sits on the stairs with him and looks at that name for a long time.
