Start at part 1

In the mist-choked valley of Kullu, an old man named Arjun runs a solitary toll booth on the only road into the high mountains. For forty years, he has watched the same black sedan roll through his window at exactly 2:13 AM, its driver always in a crisp uniform that never seems to get dirty despite the rain. The car pays with crisp notes that disappear before they hit the tray, and Arjun knows they are not just currency but offerings to keep the road clear for travelers who don't remember what they're buying. He tells himself it is just a quirk of the night, a local superstition, until he notices the driver's reflection in the rearview mirror has begun to move when no one else does.
